When You Keep Shrinking Yourself

There are moments when we make ourselves smaller without even realizing it.
We soften our opinions. We apologize for taking up space. We hide our excitement because we're afraid of looking foolish. We stay quiet when something hurts because speaking up might make someone uncomfortable.
Sometimes, we don't even recognize these behaviors as hiding.
We simply call them being easygoing.
But shadow work invites us to look a little closer.
The Shadow of Self-Abandonment
Self-abandonment doesn't always look dramatic.
Sometimes it looks like saying "I'm fine" when you're not.
It can look like agreeing when you actually want to say no.
It can look like putting everyone else's needs first and convincing yourself that yours can wait.
And sometimes, it looks like becoming whatever version of yourself you believe other people will love.
The difficult question is:
When did you learn that being fully yourself wasn't safe?
Maybe you were told you were too sensitive.
Maybe your dreams were dismissed.
Maybe expressing anger was discouraged.
Maybe you discovered that keeping the peace earned you approval.
Whatever the reason, the version of you that learned to shrink was trying to protect you.
That deserves compassion—not shame.
A Different Way Forward
You don't have to become louder, harder, or more confrontational to reclaim yourself.
You simply have to start listening to yourself again.
Notice when you want to say something but stop.
Notice when you automatically apologize.
Notice when you feel guilty for resting.
Notice when you make a decision based entirely on what someone else might think.
These moments are invitations.
Not to judge yourself.
To return to yourself.
Your needs matter.
Your feelings matter.
Your boundaries matter.
Your dreams matter.
And you don't need permission to take up space in your own life.
🌑 Shadow Reflection
Take a quiet moment today and ask yourself:
Where in my life am I making myself smaller to keep someone else comfortable?
Then ask:
What would I choose if I didn't need anyone else's approval?
Write whatever comes up—even if the answer surprises you.
You don't have to change everything today.
Just tell yourself the truth.
Sometimes the first act of reclaiming your power is simply admitting:
"I want more for myself."
And maybe that's where the transformation begins.
✨ A Little Shadow Spell
Place your hand over your heart and take three slow breaths.
Then say:
I no longer abandon myself to belong.
I honor my voice.
I honor my needs.
I honor the space I take in this world.
I am allowed to be fully myself.
Let the words settle.
You don't have to become someone new.
You are simply learning to stop disappearing.
Until next Wednesday, be gentle with the parts of you that are learning how to be seen.
