What Do You Really Want? A Journaling Ritual for Uncovering Hidden Desires

There is a strange little moment that happens when we want something deeply.

A desire rises.

And almost immediately, another voice answers it.

That's unrealistic.

You don't have time.

What would people think?

Maybe someday.

Before we've even allowed ourselves to explore the possibility, we've begun explaining why it cannot happen.

Over time, we can become so practiced at dismissing our desires that we stop noticing them altogether.

This Friday, your journal becomes a place where those quiet wants are allowed to speak.

No plans are required. No decisions need to be made.

For a little while, you are simply going to listen.

✦ Begin Without an Answer

Settle somewhere comfortable with your journal.

Light a candle if you'd like and take a few moments to become still.

Then write one question across the top of your page:

What do I want?

Notice what happens before you begin writing.

Does the question feel exciting?

Uncomfortable?

Impossible to answer?

Do you immediately begin thinking about what you should want?

Stay with it.

Then start writing.

✦ Remove the Rules

If the first question feels difficult, try another.

If no one could judge my answer, what would I want?

Let yourself be impractical.

Maybe you want something enormous.

Maybe what appears is surprisingly small.

More mornings without rushing.

A different career.

A garden.

A creative life.

More solitude.

Adventure.

A softer home.

The courage to be seen.

A life that feels less crowded.

Don't decide whether your desires are reasonable yet.

Write them down before you explain them away.

✦ Find the Desire Beneath the Desire

Choose one thing from your page that pulls at you.

Circle it.

Now ask:

Why do I want this?

Write your answer.

Then ask again:

And why does that matter to me?

Keep following the question.

You may discover that what you thought you wanted is pointing toward something deeper.

Perhaps wanting a beautiful home is really about craving safety.

Wanting to travel may be about freedom.

Wanting to create something may be about expression.

Wanting recognition may be about finally allowing yourself to be visible.

Sometimes the surface desire is only the doorway.

Your journal helps you walk through it.

✦ Notice Where You Make Yourself Smaller

Now return to your original list.

Beside anything you've repeatedly dismissed, write the reason you usually give yourself.

Then ask:

Is this truly impossible, or have I simply decided I'm not allowed to want it?

You don't need to force a positive answer.

Some desires come with real limitations. Some may change once you examine them closely.

The purpose isn't to convince yourself that everything you imagine must become yours.

The purpose is to notice where your own voice disappears beneath fear, expectation, or habit.

✦ Your Journaling Magic Prompt

Turn to a fresh page and write:

If I stopped asking whether I should want it, what would I finally admit that I do want?

Let yourself answer without correcting anything.

Then finish these sentences:

I secretly wish I could __________.

I feel most alive when __________.

I have been talking myself out of __________.

One desire I want to take seriously is __________.

One small way I can honor that desire is __________.

That final answer is where tonight's magic becomes something tangible.

You don't have to change your whole life.

You might research the class.

Open the sketchbook.

Save the idea.

Spend an hour learning something new.

Say the dream aloud.

Take one small action that tells your desire:

I heard you.

✦ A Little Magic for Your Week

Wanting something doesn't obligate you to pursue it.

You are allowed to explore a desire before deciding what it means.

You are allowed to change your mind.

And you are allowed to want something simply because some quiet part of you lights up when you imagine it.

This week, pay attention to those moments.

The ideas you keep returning to.

The things that make you linger.

The dreams you quickly dismiss.

They may be telling you something worth hearing.

Give your desires a page before you give them a reason to disappear. ✨

✦ Take This Reflection a Little Deeper

If this journaling ritual stirred something you want to explore further, the What Do I Really Want? Guided Journal Page was created to continue the practice.

The printable walks you through uncovering what you want, exploring the desire beneath it, noticing what may be holding you back, and choosing one small way to honor what you discovered.

Print a copy, make yourself something warm to drink, and give yourself a little more time with the questions that stayed with you.

Continue your reflection with the What Do I Really Want? printable in the Hearth & Hemlock Store.
